THE PROBLEMS

Rohtak is located in Haryana, about 70 km from the National Capital of Delhi. It is part of the Rohtak district, which includes both the urban area of Rohtak city and the rural areas surrounding the city. As a regional education hub, the city is home to over 200 educational institutes. Some of the biggest institutes are situated along the 3 National and 2 State Highways that slice through the city. This creates issues such as:

Poor inter-connectivity; especially for pedestrians and cyclists

Slow-moving traffic which shares the road with high-speed highway traffic

Limited crossings on the highways forcing pedestrians and cyclists to take great risks to cross the road

OBJECTIVES

To improve access to safer mobility for students

To scale up safer road infrastructure and traffic management practices for children

To increase participation in safer mobility for youth among all stakeholders

APPROACHES

Improving the availability of safer mobility alternatives by improving the autorickshaws and two-wheelers

Improving road safety infrastructure

Improving traffic management

Developing technical capacity for city officials and increase stakeholder awareness

Running design and technology competitions to engage the youth and enable youth to become change-makers
