Situation
In Zambia, the number of road traffic crashes have almost doubled in the past ten years, with the resulting number of fatalities steadily increasing. Of the reported road traffic deaths, pedestrians account for nearly 40%* of all annual fatalities.
Zambia is focused on reversing this growing trend and as such, has set an aggressive target to reduce traffic deaths by 50%* in 2020. In recent years, the country has witnessed a steady expansion of road safety initiatives, as we work together with key stakeholders and government to build a strong culture of road safety and ensure safer roads for all.

GRSP supports GRSP Zambia in its efforts to operationalize the road safety multi-ministerial MoU signed in 2015.
Education – community based
GRSP is working with GRSP Zambia, with support of the RTSA and Ministry of Transport (and other local actors) in the implementation of Safe to School – Safe to Home in the Chilenje region in Lusaka. The project reaches 2500 students and the infrastructure recommendations have been taken on as a city project by the Ministry.
Road Policing

Programmes
Global Road Safety Initiative (GRSI)
The Global Road Safety Initiative (GRSI) was one of the world’s largest joint commitments of private sector resources toward road safety in low- and middle-income countries. The Initiative is now closed, however implementations of programmes developed through the initiative such as Safe to School – Safe to Home in Vietnam and China are still in operation under local authorities and the methodology has been embedded into curriculum.
Safe to School – Safe to Home incorporates assessment of road safety conditions, the installation of appropriate and low-cost local traffic engineering improvements, extensive road safety education for children, parents and the community, together with enhanced enforcement of helmet wearing, parking restrictions and speeding.
Road user groups
Children
With around 186 300 children under 18 years die from road traffic crashes annually, it is unacceptable that some countries still do not have legislation regarding obligatory usage and set safety standards for child restraints.
