Nigeria

Country Summary

The World Health Organisation’s Global Status Report on Road Safety 2009 places Nigeria among the ten countries in the world with the highest number of reported traffic deaths. Since 2010, the Global Road Safety Partnership has been working with the Nigerian Federal Road Safety Commission to improve the situation by helping establish a national road safety partnership between the public sector, the private sector, including Shell Nigeria, and civil society.

In December 2010, the Nigerian Road Safety Partnership was formalised, making Nigeria the fifth partner on the African continent. Since this time, Shell Nigeria already sponsored a risk factor management workshop that was facilitated by the Global Road Safety Partnership. The two-day workshop included 100 senior government traffic law enforcement officials from the Rivers State, and participants addressed seatbelt wearing, speeding and distracted driving.
