Brazil city and GRSP win Prince Michael of Kent International Road Safety Award(2009-12-02)
GRSP is delighted to announce that His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent has approved that The Brazilian city of São José dos Campos and the Global Road Safety Partnership should receive a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award in recognition of its improvement in the control of road safety in the city since 2006.
The judges were impressed by the outstanding leadership shown by the City, and the effectiveness of the Global Road Safety Partnership "Proactive Partnership Strategy" in achieving a significant and sustained reduction in road crash death and serious injury in the city from 2006 onwards.
The Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards are presented to individuals, companies or organisations in recognition of their outstanding contribution to improving road safety.
"Our City is honoured and delighted to receive this recognition of the work we have done in partnership with the Global Road Safety Partnership," Mr. Eduardo Cury, the Mayor of São José dos Campos said."It will motivate us even more to continue to improve the quality of life of our citizens by reducing death and injury on our roads, and we hope will also motivate other cities to follow the same path."

The Proactive Partnership Strategy (PPS) is a process that has been developed by GRSP. It is being implemented in 20 Brazilian towns in 7 states in order to develop an advanced road safety culture driven by analysis of 30 days reliable fatality and serious injury data.
São José dos Campos is a Brazilian city 91km from São Paulo with an estimated population of population of 616,000 people. The disastrous road safety problem that exists throughout the world is also ev ident here. Eduardo Cury, the Mayor of São José dos Campos and other political and community leaders saw the strong correlation between road trauma and a decrease in the quality of life and decided to apply the Proactive Partnership Strategy to reduce road trauma. Over the last 3 years the number of people killed and seriously injured in road crashes in São José dos Campos has been decreased by 62%.
The Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards recognise achievements and innovations which will improve road safety. Each year the most outstanding examples of international road safety initiatives are given public recognition.
