The Partnership agreement between Shell and the Global Road Safety Partnership in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) was renewed and extended for the year 2012. The occasion brought two senior Shell representatives to Beirut; Steve Brigg, Vice President Health, Safety and Environment & Sustainable Development (HSE&SD), MENA, and Hendrik Moorrees, Shell Road Safety Manager for MENA.

On 7 December 2011, the Ukrainian Road Safety Association (URSA) identified the Global Road Safety Partnership as one of its six partners, presenting the Partnership with an annual award for road safety action and promotion of partnerships in Ukraine. The award was an instrumental part of efforts to the lay the groundwork for the UN Decade of Action.

For the Siem Reap Provinical Government in Cambodia, the end of 2011 foreshadowed a positive start to the New Year in terms of road safety. Together with the Global Road Safety Partnership, on 1 December, local government officials signed a memorandum of understanding to pilot the internationally renowned, Proactive Partnership Strategy (PPS).  

The Proactive Partnership Strategy is based upon psychological research in industries that have needed to create highly safe cultures.

As part of its ongoing efforts to promote road safety in the Sultanate of Oman, Shell – a partner of the Global Road Safety Partnership for over ten years – launched a promising initiative aimed at reducing crash rates in the country under the title “Together for Accident Free Oman". In partnership with Sheida International and Co. and Oman Road Safety Association, Shell set off an interactive road show that toured 22 crowded locations across Oman throughout January, including commercial malls, colleges and universities.

The annual Global Road Safety Partnership Asia Seminar will be on 7-8 March 2012 in Bangkok, Thailand and will again be followed by an International Road Assessment Program (iRAP) Workshop on 9 March 2012. This year’s seminar theme is “Decade of Action: Time to Act!” The seminar and workshop provide an important opportunity for capacity building, information sharing and networking. A joint Pledge to improve road safety signed by representatives of states and National Societies leaders at the 31st International Red Cross Red Crescent Conference last November in Geneva marked yet another global milestone towards improving the situation in road safety in the world - and momentum is continuing to build.

The Global Road Safety Partnership announces the launch of its new global website with a new design and most importantly with fresh content and additional features, including links to social media outlets.

“We are determined to reach many more people and get them involved in the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety,” says Andrew Pearce, the CEO of the partnership, “and we believe the efficient and creative use of modern communications technology can help us a great deal towards reaching this strategic objective as well as making access to our information easier for our existing colleagues.”
