Building bridges of understanding for road safety in Slovenia

In the near future, Slovenia will have to deal with the challenge of creating a coordinated and stable road safety system at the national, regional and local levels. Effective collaboration among road safety stakeholders is critical in order to meet this challenge.

In a ceremony held in Brussels on 25 April, Royal Dutch Shell, one the largest worldwide oil companies and an active partner of the Global Road Safety Partnership, received the PRAISE Annual Award for Road Safety in the category of large companies. “Preventing Road Accidents and Injuries for the Safety of Employees” (PRAISE) is a project run by the non-profit European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), which aims to increase road safety in the work context. It awards good practices in order to help employers secure high road safety standards for their employees.

Annual PRAISE Seminar

The past few years, the Global Road Safety Partnership has worked closely with the European Transport Safety Counctil (ETSC) to run the annual PRAISE seminar. The ETSC project, Preventing Road Accidents and Injuries for the Safety of Employees (PRAISE), aims to increase road safety in the work context. ETSC’s project aims to “praise” best practices in order to help employers secure high road safety standards for their employees. This year, in cooperation with the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA), the ETSC invites you to its annual PRAISE Seminar in Brussels.

Making a "safe start in a journey of life"

In November, a campaign titled "First car seat - Safe start in a journey of life" was launched in Poland, Hungary, and Ukraine. The campaign was initiated by Raben Group and the Global Road Safety Partnership, and is currently supported by several organisations including the Sesame Workshop, a partner of GRSP. Local divisions of the Global Road Safety Partnership including GRSP Hungary and GRSP Poland, as well as GRSP's partner in Ukraine, the Ukrainian Road Safety Partnership (URSA), are implementing national campaigns in each country.

On 7 December 2011, the Ukrainian Road Safety Association (URSA) identified the Global Road Safety Partnership as one of its six partners, presenting the Partnership with an annual award for road safety action and promotion of partnerships in Ukraine. The award was an instrumental part of efforts to the lay the groundwork for the UN Decade of Action.

WHO article shows how Sakhalin partnership made seat-belts "cool"

The Bulletin of the World Health Organization recently featured a comprehensive seat-belt campaign developed by the Sakhalin Road Safety Partnership (SRSP) that has dramatically increased seat-belt use and yielded evidence of reduced traffic-related injury.

Entitled "Buckling up is 'cool' on Russian Island," the article describes how a fatal crash in 2004 led to creation of  SRSP, which later spearheaded a multi-faceted education and enforcement campaign that has increased seat-belt use on the island from 3 percent in 2005 to 80 percent in 2008.

Japanese wisdom inspires vision for road safety in Central Europe

In Japanese culture there is a proverb: "Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare."  The statement resonated recently with thirteen partners from the road safety project, Save Our Lives (SOL), as they worked to create a common vision to address road safety in Central Europe.

Romania Red Cross links road safety to First Aid training

Typically, there is a gap of time between the moment a road-crash happens and when paramedics arrive. Those few minutes can be critical, even life saving, but how many people know what should be done? 

The Romania Red Cross, a partner of the Global Road Safety Partnership-Romania, is working to address this issue by offering First Aid training to local communities. The aim is to compliment the efforts of the paramedics and other local organisations that offer support after an accident and organize blood donations.

RS-10 Saving lives in Russia by campaigning for seat belt awareness

In observance of World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on November 21, the citizens of Lipetsk fixed 232 white balloons in the city square, also marking the beginning of a mass public campaign promoting the use of seatbelts.

The campaign was a culmination of efforts undertaken by a consortium of international partners from the global project, Road Safety in Ten Countries (RS-10) which Russia began participating in July 2010. Using the slogan, "Do not break the life line!" the seat belt campaign aims to reduce risks leading to unjustified losses of lives and health on the roads.

Poland seeks new opportunities to improve road safety

Paying tribute to those killed in road crashes and taking a united stand to reduce road deaths were among the key themes of an international conference organized by the Polish Government just after the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on 22 November.

In 2009 alone, 4,572 people were killed in road crashes in Poland, putting the country on the top of the list for road-crash-related deaths in Europe.

Entitled "Road Accident Victims - Our Common Responsibility," the conference was held at the Polish Parliament building in Warsaw.

Europe’s young ‘Stars’ : Encouraging a new generation of road-safety professionals

Young people interested in road safety are at the heart of an 18-month project that aims to jump-start transport research into speed management.

The STARS project, as it's called, encourages students around Europe to run a local speed-management action to reduce speeding through infrastructure projects or communication projects (awareness campaigns, etc.). STARS is developed by the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) and, at this phase, is being implemented in Romania, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece and Spain.

The beginning of a new road safety campaign in the city of Lviv in western Ukraine coincided with the handover of five speed-detection radars from the Queensland Police Service (QPS) in Australia.

"On behalf of the Global Road Safety Partnership and the European Union project for the Integration of Ukraine into the Trans-European Transport Networks I am delighted to hand over this radar equipment to the Lviv city Police Department," said Anthony Pearce, Senior Project Adviser of the EU's TEN-T project in Ukraine, at a press conference held in Lviv on 4 August.

A safe-driving tour through the eyes of GRSP Hungary’s new president

In April this year, 40-year-old Balázs Tokár was elected president of GRSP/Hungary. A representative for Shell on the GRSP Hungary board since 2007, he has been involved in a number of joint projects within GRSP, including "Traffic playground" with a mini Shell station that is still operational in Budapest and used by local school classes. "Interestingly," he says, "when we were opening the playground back in 2008 - a troublesome political time for Hungary - representatives of all opposition parties from the local administration were present at the ceremony.
